Start with the aerator, the little screen where water exits the faucet. Unscrew it and look at it. Orange County water leaves mineral scale, and those screens slowly fill with white buildup until the faucet feels weaker every month. On older faucets the aerator threads right off by hand. Many newer ones hide it up inside the spout, where it takes a small keyed tool to back out. That's what the little plastic key in your faucet's box was for, so it's worth keeping, because cleaning the aerator is a job every home comes back to now and then.

An hour in a bowl of white vinegar dissolves most mineral scale off an aerator or a showerhead. If the screen clears and the pressure comes back, you just fixed it for the cost of pantry vinegar. If the same aerator keeps clogging every few months, the scale is coming from inside the pipes. And if vinegar does not bring it back, a new aerator is only a couple of dollars at the hardware store. Match the faucet's finish, brushed nickel or chrome, so it looks right when you thread it back on.
Low water pressure in the shower has one extra suspect: the showerhead itself. Many carry a small flow restrictor, and shower valves have cartridges that clog with the same scale. A weak shower next to strong sinks is almost never a whole-house problem.
Check the stop valves too. Those little oval handles under sinks and behind toilets get bumped, and a half-open valve feels exactly like a pressure problem. Open them all the way.

Run the cold side of a faucet, then the hot side, and compare. If cold runs strong and hot runs weak at every fixture, the problem lives at or near the heater, because the heater is the one thing all your hot water passes through. That's a water heater repair conversation.

A sudden whole-house drop is usually caused by a pressure regulator giving out, a hidden leak, or work on the water lines nearby. A gradual fade over months or years usually means mineral buildup narrowing older pipes.

Our own job records say the first clue is rarely the dramatic one. A creeping water bill, a pressure change, a musty smell, or the sound of water moving in a quiet house each show up long before anything reaches the floor. What if there's no water pressure at all?
No water at all usually means a closed valve, a regulator that has quit completely, or a shutoff outside your home, like a main break or district work in the street. Here's the fast checklist.
Check the two valves first. The house shutoff, usually near a front hose bib or in the garage, and the meter valve out at the curb can both end up partly closed after any plumbing work. Older valves can stick; if one won't turn by hand, stop rather than forcing it.
The neighbor check is the fastest diagnostic in plumbing. If the house next door has weak water too, the cause is out in the street. If your neighbor's pressure is fine and yours is gone, the problem is between the meter and your fixtures, and that's a plumber's lane.

Its job is to take street pressure, which can run far higher than your fixtures want, and hold the house at a steady number.

How to tell if your water pressure regulator is bad.
The pattern we see: pressure that wanders from one day to the next, a banging or humming in the pipes when water shuts off, a gauge reading that won't hold steady, and eventually a whole-house pressure drop nothing else explains.
