Ask ten people when drain season is and most will say winter. Rain, storms, water everywhere. Winter must be when the drains give plumbers their busiest weeks.

Our own records say otherwise. We've completed more than 5,500 drain and sewer jobs across Orange County since 2020, and when we lay them out on a calendar, September is consistently our busiest drain month. January is actually our quietest. Summer drain calls run about 15% ahead of winter.

There's one exception, and it's the reason this page exists. Storm and yard drains, the grates in your patio, side yard, and garage, are the one category that truly follows the rain. Those calls spike in September, again in November right around the first storms, and run at roughly double the summer pace from November through March.

So here's the honest framing: get your drains ready in late summer and fall because that's what the calendar says, not out of fear of winter. The homes that call us during the first November storm are usually dealing with something a twenty-minute check in September would have caught.

Why do drains back up when it rains?

Before the checklist, it helps to understand the mechanism, because it explains why some homes have a rough time every wet winter and the house next door never notices.

Your home has two separate drain systems underground, and in our experience a lot of homeowners never register that. The sanitary sewer line carries wastewater from your toilets, sinks, and showers to the city main. The storm and yard drains are a completely different system that carries rainwater from your roof, patio, and landscape away from the house. Those two systems should never connect, and holding that picture in your head makes everything else on this page click into place.

When it rains hard, three things can go wrong:

1. The public sewer main takes on rainwater it was never designed for. Rainwater sneaks into sewer lines through cracked joints and root openings in the ground. During a big storm, the city main can fill beyond its normal level, and in low-lying homes that extra flow can push back up through the home's lowest drain. That's why a rain-related backup usually shows up at the garage floor drain or a downstairs shower first. Almost every home in Orange County is built slab-on-grade with no basement, so the lowest fixture in the house is the relief point.

2. Saturated soil works on older pipes. Much of inland Orange County sits on clay soil that swells when it's wet and shrinks when it's dry. That seasonal movement works on pipe joints, and roots are most active right after heavy rain, when loose wet soil lets them travel. A line that behaved all summer can start acting up a few weeks into the wet season. Tree roots finding a joint is one of the most common camera findings we see.

3. The yard drains simply clog. This is the boring one and the most common one. Yard drains, area drains, and downspout lines sit dormant through our long dry summer, quietly collecting leaves, sediment, and roof grit. The first real storm arrives, the system is already half full of debris, and water backs up at the grates and heads toward the house.

Only one of those three is about the storm itself. The other two are about what the dry season left behind. That's why preparation beats reaction here.

There's a fourth situation worth naming, because we do come across it: downspouts or yard drains tied directly into the sanitary sewer line. Rainwater should never be connected to the home's sewer system. A whole host of problems can arise from that, and there's a good reason it's a code violation. If we ever see one of these cross-connections, we recommend correcting it right away, and we would disconnect a downspout-to-sewer tie-in every time. It comes back to the two-systems picture above: the indoor sanitary drains and the outdoor storm drainage are different systems with different jobs, and keeping them separate is the whole game.

The pre-season readiness checklist

Here's what we'd do at our own homes in September, in order. Most of it is free and takes an afternoon.

1. Keep the everyday habits going

The daily stuff still matters most, rain or shine. No grease down the kitchen sink, strainers in the drains, and the flushing rule that outperforms any gadget:

The Three P's rule (Pee, Poop, and toilet Paper) is the single most effective thing you can do for your sewer line. Everything else belongs in the trash. This one habit alone prevents roughly half the clogs we clear.

2. Find your cleanout before you need it

If a backup ever does happen, the cleanout is where a plumber gets access to your main line, and knowing where it is saves real time on a rainy night. It's also a monthly check worth keeping:

Walk outside and find your cleanout. That's the capped pipe near your foundation or in your yard. Check for any signs of leakage around the cap. While you're out there, walk the yard and look for any unusual wet spots, soft ground, or depressions in the soil along the path of your sewer line.

3. Flush the yard and area drains

This is the single highest-leverage pre-season task, because storm and yard drains are the one category our data says truly follows the rain.

On a dry day, run a garden hose into each yard drain, patio drain, and channel drain for a few minutes. Watch two things: does the water go down freely at the grate, and does it come out wherever the line daylights (usually at the curb or a slope)? If water ponds at the grate or never appears at the outlet, the line is blocked somewhere in the middle, and it's much better to learn that in September than in the first November storm.

While you're at it, clear leaves off every grate, and check where your rain gutters discharge: into a clear line or at least several feet from the foundation, not straight onto the slab. Water dumping beside the foundation belongs in a storm drain, not against the house.

Run the water into the drain. Don't put the hose itself inside the drain. I've been out to at least four or five properties over the years to extract a garden hose that got stuck inside an outdoor drain. I don't know how they get stuck, but I do know one husband got in a lot of trouble because his wife kept saying "call a plumber" and he refused. I literally have photos of hoses coiled up inside outdoor drains because of stubborn husbands. Run water into the drain, make sure it's flowing. That's all you need to do. If for some reason it's not flowing, call a plumber.

One more warning while we're on yard drains: skip the rented snake. Homeowners often figure a blocked outdoor drain means a trip to the hardware store for a rental cable, and we regularly see those cables bind up and break off inside the line. Outdoor storm drains are typically a different type of PVC pipe that isn't made to handle certain drain augers, so a tool that's fine in a sink line can get a homeowner into real trouble out here. Good people doing bad things to plumbing, as we say.

If the hose test fails, that's a job for a jetter, not a shovel. Blocked exterior lines are usually silted along their whole run, and hydro jetting is the safest, most efficient way to clear a storm drain that isn't flowing, because it scours the pipe clean instead of poking a hole through the middle. 4. Know your home type

Not every home needs the same prep. Here's how we'd think about it by house.

Slab homes (most of Orange County). With no basement, your lowest drain is the relief point for the whole system: usually the garage floor drain or a downstairs shower. Make sure the garage floor drain is clear before the season, and if your water heater lives in the garage, glance at the base for rust or dampness while you're down there.

Canyon and hillside lots. Homes in places like Trabuco Canyon and the foothill edges of Lake Forest and Rancho Santa Margarita take concentrated runoff from the slopes above them. These lots rely on subdrains, terrace drains, and retaining-wall weep holes that silt up quietly over the years. Before the season, confirm the terrace drains and weeps are open and flowing. Canyon terrain works drains harder. That's not a reason to worry; it's a reason to check.

Homes with mature trees. Roots are always hunting for water, and they're most aggressive right after the rain starts. If you have mature trees within 30 feet of your sewer line, especially ficus, sycamore, eucalyptus, or willow, a pre-season camera inspection every couple of years catches small root tendrils while they're still simple to clear.

Homes with a prior backup. This is the group we'd most like to reach before the rain. Nearly 1 in 4 of our drain and sewer customers across Orange County has needed us more than once. A cleared drain isn't always a fixed drain. If your home has backed up before, especially during a storm, the two moves that change the story are a camera inspection to find out why, and for low-lying homes, a backwater valve (below).

5. When a camera check makes sense

We're not going to tell every homeowner they need an annual camera inspection. The data tells us who actually benefits: the roughly one-quarter of drain customers whose problem comes back. If that's you, or your home matches the list below, an inspection before the season is money well spent:

For homes with any of these factors, inspect every 1-2 years:

  • Built before 1980, which includes much of Tustin, Orange, Costa Mesa, and the original sections of Santa Ana (likely clay or cast iron pipes)
  • Mature trees within 30 feet of the sewer line
  • Previous sewer line issues
  • History of recurring clogs

Cost: $298-$525, often discounted when bundled with other services.

Here's the math on prevention. Camera inspection every 2-3 years ($298-$525) + hydro-jetting every 2-5 years ($350-$900) = roughly $250-$350 per year averaged out. Compare that to a single emergency sewer backup: $2,500-$7,000+. Prevention is 10-20x cheaper than the emergency. Worth noting: Orange County's hard water, which ranges from 12 to 18 grains per gallon depending on your city, accelerates mineral scale buildup inside pipes. In Anaheim, water hardness reaches 18 GPG, the highest in the county. That kind of mineral content means buildup happens faster than homeowners expect, which makes the case for regular jetting even stronger.

6. The backwater valve, for homes that sit low

First, some honest framing. Storm water should never be connected to your sewer line in the first place, so in a properly plumbed home, rain alone shouldn't be able to push sewage back into the house. But we've seen a lot of plumbing done wrong over the years, including homes where the two systems were connected when they never should have been, and we've seen the flooding and the damage that follows.

Where a backwater valve genuinely earns its keep is elevation. A backwater valve, also called a one-way check valve, is installed on the main sewer line and lets water flow in one direction only: away from the house, toward the main. Around here they're most common in HOA neighborhoods, including many communities in Irvine, and in hillier areas where homes on the same line sit at different elevations. In those neighborhoods, if the community drain line ever clogs, the backed-up water would otherwise head straight into the lowest homes on the line. The check valve is the safety point that stops that.

One important note if you already have one: depending on the type, a valve that's never been serviced can get stuck in the open position, and a stuck-open valve can't do its job until it's repaired. If you're not sure whether your home has one, or when yours was last looked at, ask us to include a valve check with your pre-season inspection.

7. Run the washing machine drain test

Before the season starts, here's a simple way to check your whole system at home. No tools required.

Do not attempt the washing machine drain test if you are currently experiencing any drain problems, including slow drains, gurgling, or any backup in any fixture. The washing machine pushes a large volume of water into the system very quickly. If there is any existing restriction in the main line, that surge of water can cause backups in other parts of the home. Run this test only as a routine check when everything is draining normally. If you already have symptoms, leave the diagnosis to a professional.

  1. Run a load of laundry (with or without clothes) and wait for it to reach the drain cycle.
  2. While the water is filling, plug your lowest-level sinks and bathtub.
  3. When the washing machine starts draining, release the stoppers.
  4. Go to the lowest bathroom in your house and watch. Look for gurgling sounds, slow drainage, or water level changes in the toilet.

The washing machine sends a surge of water through the system all at once. If there's any restriction in the main line, this test surfaces it. The healthy response is: nothing happens. Water drains normally, no gurgling, no level changes.

If you notice backup, gurgling, or fluctuating water levels, schedule a camera inspection. It doesn't mean something is seriously wrong. It means something is starting to restrict flow, and catching it now is a lot simpler than catching it after a backup.

What we see around the county

A few patterns from our own job records, because readiness looks a little different depending on where you live.

Lake Forest is where we've done more storm-drain work than any other city (27 dedicated storm and yard drain jobs since 2020), which fits: it's our home turf, and parts of the city back onto the Aliso Creek drainage. That creek has real history. The 1998 storm season produced the largest flow ever recorded on Aliso Creek, the channel that threads through Lake Forest, Laguna Hills, Aliso Viejo, and Laguna Niguel, flooding the Aliso Creek Inn downstream and taking out six footbridges along the corridor ( Aliso Creek flood history)). The county added detention basins in response, and the system has largely done its job since. The takeaway for homeowners near the corridor: the public system handles the creek; your side of the fence is keeping your own yard drains moving so water actually reaches it.

Trabuco Canyon works drains harder than anywhere else we serve: the highest storm-drain rate (about 1 in 9 drain calls) and the highest hydro-jetting rate (1 in 6) in our records. Canyon runoff is the mechanism. If we could hand-deliver this checklist to one zip code, it would be this one.

Laguna Beach is our drain and sewer outlier: drain and sewer work makes up over 21% of everything we do there, nearly double our county norm, and almost 4 in 10 of our Laguna Beach drain customers have had the problem come back at least once. Older homes, older lines, canyon geography. If you're in an older coastal or canyon home, the camera-inspection section above applies to you double.

Mission Viejo, Rancho Santa Margarita, and Irvine round out our storm-drain map (24, 16, and 19 storm and yard drain jobs respectively). Irvine deserves a word of reassurance: it's our highest-volume drain city overall (1,100+ jobs since 2020), yet its master-planned drainage has held up well in every big winter on record. Most of what goes wrong there is the unglamorous stuff this checklist covers: a silted patio drain, a slow garage drain.

This Year's Outlook: Winter 2026-2027

As of the August 13, 2026 advisory from NOAA's Climate Prediction Center, El Niño conditions are active in the Pacific and still strengthening, with a greater than 90% chance this becomes a very strong event during fall and winter 2026-27, and a 69% chance the October-through-December season becomes the strongest El Niño on record since 1950 ( NOAA CPC). European seasonal models are pointing the same direction, and forecasters like UCLA's Daniel Swain are describing an unusually strong wet-winter signal for California.

Here's the part we'd want you to hear from a neighbor rather than a headline: a strong El Niño raises the odds of a wet winter. It does not guarantee one. The 2015-2016 El Niño was scientifically one of the three strongest ever measured, and Southern California still ended up with roughly average rain because the storm track went north ( Scripps). Every El Niño is different.

That's exactly why this page is built the way it is. Everything on the checklist above is worth doing in a normal winter, useful in a dry one, and valuable in a wet one. If the forecast verifies, you're ready early. If it doesn't, you've spent an afternoon and a modest inspection on things your home needed anyway. Likely wet, no regrets either way.

If it happens during or right after rain, the pattern points to the main line or the public sewer rather than the drain itself. That correlation with weather, rather than with your own water use, is exactly the clue a plumber wants to hear when you call.

Yes, though less often than people assume. Our records show most drain problems in Orange County happen year-round, with September as our busiest month. What heavy rain does is find the weak point that already existed: the root-intruded joint, the silted yard drain, the low home without a backwater valve. Rain is the stress test, not usually the cause.
